Virtual Community Discussion
This virtual discussion explores how stigma around mental health can appear within families and across generations. Cultural beliefs, silence, and misunderstandings can sometimes make it harder for people to seek help or speak openly about their struggles. This session focuses on recognizing these patterns and learning more supportive ways to talk about mental health at home.
Guided by a mental health professional (to be announced), this interactive workshop will:
-
Explore how stigma can appear in everyday family interactions, including silence, minimizing, or blame
-
Reflect on how cultural and generational experiences shape beliefs about mental health
-
Examine common myths and assumptions through short group activities and discussion
-
Introduce practical communication tools such as validation, curiosity-based questions, and supportive language
-
Provide opportunities to practice responding to real-life family situations in a respectful learning environment
This session is designed for parents, caregivers, family members, educators, and community supporters who want to foster more open and compassionate conversations about mental health within families and communities.
The discussion will be held in a respectful, non-judgmental space. Participants are welcome to participate at their comfort level and will leave with practical communication strategies and information about KAPWB programs and supports for families and caregivers.
