Virtual Community Discussion
This virtual discussion focuses on practical ways couples can communicate more effectively and stay connected during periods of stress. When people are overwhelmed by work, caregiving, mental health challenges, or everyday pressures, conversations can quickly turn into misunderstandings or conflict. This session offers simple tools to slow down communication and respond to one another with greater clarity and care.
Guided by a mental health professional or experienced facilitator (to be announced), this interactive workshop will:
-
Explore how stress and emotional strain can affect communication and conflict in relationships
-
Introduce a simple “calm communication” framework to help couples pause and respond more thoughtfully
-
Practice using clear “I-statements” and active listening to express needs and understand each other
-
Identify common conflict patterns such as criticism, defensiveness, or shutting down
-
Learn small “repair” strategies couples can use to de-escalate tension and reconnect during difficult moments
Participants will also have opportunities to reflect on their own communication habits and develop a few simple agreements they can use at home when conversations become stressful.
This session is designed for couples, partners, and caregivers who want to strengthen communication and maintain connection during challenging times.
The discussion will be held in a respectful, supportive environment. Participants are welcome to engage at their comfort level and will leave with practical communication tools and information about KAPWB programs and supports.
